3x + - 0.5 (x + 3) + 4 = 14

    X = 4.6, first subtract the 4 from both sides, then distribute the -.5 to the x and 3, then add like terms (3x and-.5x), then add the 1.5 to both sides, finally divide by 2.5 on both sides.
