    40 and 0.5

    Step-by-step explanation:

    48 and 1/2 metres = 48.5 metres

    1 and 1/5 metres = 1.2 metres

    Take 48.5 and divide it by 1.2 and you will get 40.41666667 ...

    Since the maximum whole number you can get is 40, you can cut 40 pieces of 1.2 metres of ribbon off.

    Remainder = 48.5 - (40 x 1.2) = 0.5 metres left
