What is the value for x when using algebra tiles to

solve the equation x + 1 = - x + (-5) ?

    The answer is

    x+1=-x + (-5) subtract x both sides

    2x+1 = (-5) subtract 1 both sides

    2x = (-5) - 1 combine like terms

    2x=-6 dived by 2 both sides

    x=-3
