From equation one, y = x + 2
So, substitute x + 2 for y into equation two
We have
x + 2 = 3x - 2
Add 2 to both sides of the equation
x + 2 + 2 = 3x - 2 + 2
x + 4 = 3x
Subtract x from both sides
x - x + 4 = 3x - x
4 = 2x
Divide both sides by by 2
4/2 = 2x/2
2 = x
x = 2
Substitute 2 for x in either of the equations to get y.
Using the first equation, we have
y = 2 + 2
y = 4
