Statistical significance is based on the value of the probability of committing a type I error when executing a hypothesis test under the assumption that the null hypothesis is true. That is, the conditional probability of rejecting the null hypothesis, given that said null hypothesis is true. To the extent that the probability of committing the type I error is smaller, the conclusion obtained from the test will be more significant.

Therefore, statistical significance means that the likelihood of getting these results by chance is very small.
