How do u add fractions together for fifth grade

make sure the denominators (common denominators) are the same in order to add the fractions

Example:

1/2+2/16

common denominator for 1/2 is 16

multiply by 8 for 1/2

1*8/2*8=8/16

8/16+2/16=10/16

reduce fraction by dividing by 2

10/2=5

16/2=8

10/16=5/8
