    Remember

    rate of change/slope between (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) is

    (y2-y1) / (x2-x1)

so the average from x=-1 to x=4 is

    (f (4) - f (-1)) / (4 - (-1))

    f (-1) = - 1

    f (4) = 4

    average is (4 - (-1)) / (4 - (-1)) = 1

average rate of change is 1
