Lena wants to open a new restaurant in a mall and needs to determine what kind of food to serve to attract the most customers. Out of 1200 mall visitors, 200 are asked their food preference.

In statistics, you must gather a significant number of data to be able to predict the general behavior or trend of the whole. In other words, for practical purposes, statisticians only gather a part of the whole, which is called the sample. These practical purposes may pertain to time, manpower and reach. To avoid bias, you should gather at least a majority and outsource from random places, personalities or characteristics within the whole or population. The whole is the population.
