What two numbers multiply to - 320 and add to 32

    Let a and b be the numbers, then a+b=32, b=32-a

    ab=-320

    a (32-a) = - 320

    32a-a^2=-320

    a^2-32a-320=0

    a^2-40a+8a-320=0

    a (a-40) + 8 (a-40) = 0

    (a-40) (a+8) = 0

    a=40 or-8

    when a=40, b=32-40=-8

    when a=-8, b=32 - (-8) = 32+8=40

    so numbers are 40 and - 8
