Let the two numbers be x and y respectively

CaseI

x+y=49

or, x=49-y

Case II

x-y=1/2

or, 49-y-y=1/2 (from case I)

or, 49-2y=1/2

or, 49-1/2=2y

or, (49*2-1) / 2=2y

or, 97/2=2y

or, 48.5=2y

or, 48.5/2=y

Y=24.25

Now,

X=49-y

or, x=49-24.25

X=24.75
