    x^2 - 19 - (17 - x).

    Distribute - 1 to each term of g (x).

    x^2 - 19 - 17 + x.

    Replace x with 5.

    5^2 - 18 - 17 + 5

    25 - 18 - 17 + 4

    Simplify.

    -6 is your answer.
