Say that the national weather service claims the average number of tornados that occur in Ohio annually is 52. Your team of weather inspectors collects random data and plugs the information into a statistical program. The resulting "P" value is equal to 0.016. Would you accept or reject the null hypothesis that the mean was equal to 52 at a level of significance of  = 0.05.

    Answer: we would reject the null hypothesis that the mean was equal to 52 at a level of significance of alpha = 0.05.

    Step-by-step explanation:

    The null hypothesis is the hypothesis that is assumed to be true while the alternative hypothesis is the statement that is believed to be true if the null hypothesis is rejected.

    From the given information, the null hypothesis is

    µ = 52

    The decision rule would be to accept the null hypothesis if the level of significance is lesser than the p value and reject the null hypothesis if the level of significance is greater than the p value

    Since alpha, 0.05 > than the p value, 0.016, then we would reject the null hypothesis.
