    Let x = number of miles driven

    Let n = $

    $1.10x + $2.50 = n

    $1.10x + $2.50 = $10

    - $2.50 - $2.50

    $1.10x = $7.50

    --- - - ---

    $1.10 $1.10

    x = 6 miles

    check work

    $1.10x + $2.50 = n

    $1.10 (6) + $2.50 = $10?

    $6.60 + $2.50 = $10?

    $9.10 = $10

    you'll have 90 cents left over
