Identify the equation that represents the data in the table.

[x | y]

[ - 2 | 11 ]

[ 0 | 5 ]

[ 1 | 2 ]

[ 3 | - 4 ]

y = x + 5

y = - 3x + 5

y = - 5x + 1

y = x + 13

    The first thing you need to find is the slope. The slope formula can be thought as (the change in y values) / (the change in x values). So we can take two y values and find the difference.

    11 - 5=6

    Then we must take the two corresponding x values and find the difference of them as well.

    -2 - 0 = -2

    So by using the slope formula you can plug in the change in the y values over the change in x values and you come up with a slope of 6/-2 or - 3.

    Next you would need to find the y intercept. The y intercept is the y value that corresponds to when x=0. By looking in the table you can see that y is equal to 5 when x equals 0, so the y intercept is 5.

    Finally you plug these values into the line formula.

    y=mx+b

    m=slope

    b=y intercept

    y=-3x+5 is the correct answer.
