    5 (v-3) - 7v=1

    mutiply the bracket by 5

    (5) (v) (5) (-3) - 7v = 1

    5v-15-7v

    5v-7v-15 - combing like terms

    5v-7v-15 = 1

    -2v-15 = 1

    move - 15 to the other side

    sign changes from - 15 to + 15

    -2v-15+15 = 1+15

    -2v=16

    divide by - 2 for both sides

    -2v/-2 = 16/-2

    Cross out - 2 and - 2, divide by - 2 then becomes 1*1*v = v

    v = - 8

    Answer: v=-8
