First subtract the difference of the two by the total:

    440 - 54 = 386

    Now divide that by 2:

    386 / 2 = 193

193 is the number of Sociology books sold.

Now add 54 to 193 for the total Physics books:

    193 + 54 = 247 Physics books were sold.
