If 5x + 3y = 12 and 4x - 5y = 17, what is y?

    multiply (*) by : - 4 and (**) by 5

    you have : - 20x - 12 = - 48 ... (1)

    20x - 25y = 85 ... (2)

    add (1) and (2) : - 37y = 37 so : y = 37/-37 = - 1
