    5 (2x + 1) = 2x + 21

    Multiply the 5 into (2x + 1)

    10x + 5 = 2x + 21

    Subtract 2x on both sides to get the "x" on one side of the equation

    8x + 5 = 21

    Subtract 5 on both sides

    8x = 16

    Divide 8 on both sides to get "x" by itself

    x = 2

    5 (2x+1) = 2x+21

    Multiply 5 times (2+1)

    10x+5=2x+21

    Subtract - 2x from 10x

    10x - 2x = 8x

    8x+5=21

    Subtract 5 from 21

    21 - 5 = 16

    8x=16

    Divide 16 by 8

    16 / 8 = 2

    x = 2

    Answer: x=2
