A taxi charges a flat rate of 1.75, plus an additional 0.65 per mile. If Erika has at most $10 to spend on the cab ride, how far could she travel

    you start by 10-1.75. that should get you 8.25.

    why? because it starts with a cost you have to pay before you can go any where. you have to pay for your seat.

    then divide 8.25 by 0.65 which should get you 12 and a really long decimal. Since you cant go that long decimal of a mile Erika can go 12 miles.

    why divide? because you have to pay for the distance you travel, and you want to travel as far as you can, so you divide the money you have left by the cost per mile
