    x + (x + 2) = 40

Consecutive off numbers are 2 apart

so if x is one then y=2+x

and their sum is 40 so x+y=40

    the 2 equations are x+y=40 and y=x+2

if we substitute we get x+x+2=40 so x=19

    and therefore y=2+19=21
