Nora works at a donut shop. At the end of her shift, the change in the tip jar totals $13.05. The jar contains quarters, dimes, nickels. The number of dimes is 3 more than twice the number of nickels and the number of quarters is 1 less than three times the number of nickels. Find the number of dimes in the jar.

    Find out the number of dimes in the jar.

    To prove

    Let us assume that the number of nickels be x.

    As given

    At the end of her shift, the change in the tip jar totals $13.05.

    The jar contains quarters, dimes, nickels.

    The number of dimes is 3 more than twice the number of nickels.

    The number of quarters is 1 less than three times the number of nickels.

    Than the number of dimes = 3 + 2x

    Than the number of quarters = 3x - 1

    As

    1 dime = $0.10

    1 quarters = $ 0.25

    1 nickels = $ 0.05

    Than the equation becoms

    0.10 * (3 + 2x) + 0.05x + 0.25 * (3x-1) = 13.05

    0.3 + 0.2x + 0.05x + 0.75x - 0.25 = 13.05

    0.2x + 0.05x + 0.75x = 13.05 - 0.3 + 0.25

    x = 13

    The number of dimes in the jars = 3 + 2x

    = 3 + 2 * 13

    = 29

    Therefore the number of dimes in the jar is 29.
