Assume that the additional miles that make the charge for total miles the same at each company is x (miles)

The charge of total miles by Metro taxi is: 3 + 2.5x ($)

The charge of total miles by City taxi is: 5 + 2.25x ($)

As the charge for the total is the same at each company, so that we have the equation as following: 3 + 2.5x = 5 + 2.25x

=> 2.5x - 2.25x = 5-3

=> 0.25x = 2

=> x = 2/0.25 = 8 (miles)

=> The total miles are: 8 + 1 = 9 miles
