    Here's a counter example to prove the statement to be incorrect

    first number = 1

    second number = - 2

    sum = 1 + (-2) = - 1

    difference = 1 - (-2) = 1 + 2 = 3

    We see that the difference (3) is not smaller than the sum (-1)
