    You just gotta multiply the negative in the parentheses

    why? because if you had to multiply 9 and the negative you should have - 9 not 9-

    u know what I'm saying

    No but you can rewrite the negative as - 1 then distribute the - 1:-

    5x+14-2x=9 - (4x+2)

    5x + 14 - 2x = 9 - 1 (4x + 2)

    3x + 14 = 9 - 4x - 2 Add - 14 and 4x to both sides:-

    3x + 4x = 9 - 2 - 14

    7x = - 7

    x = - 1 answer
