Justin drank 5 bottles before the trip.

    Step-by-step explanation:

Justin had 5 packages with 8 bottles of water each = 40 bottles of water

He drank some of the bottles before the trip. = ? * We don't know this.*

During the trip, he drank 5 bottles a day. = ? * We don't know this.*

He drank all the bottles before he went home.? * We don't know this.*

Since there are many parts we still don't know of this problem, we have to make our own data.

Only 40 bottles, only 5 bottles a day during the trip:

5 x 5 = 25 (5 is showing the 5 bottles he drank a day during the trip. The other 5 is showing 5 days because I think the trip was 5 days.)

40 - 25 = 15 (40 is showing how many bottles Justin has in total. 25 is showing how many times he drank water over the trip.)

With our own data, we have so far come to this:

There were 5 days on the trip and Justin drank 5 bottles of water. This is 25 bottles throughout the trip. Now if you subtract 25 from 40, the solution is how many bottles Justin could've possibly drank before and after the trip.

    15 can be split up many ways: 1 + 14, 2 + 13, 3 + 12, 4 + 11, 5 + 10, 4 + 9, etc.

    I'm going with 5 + 10.

So Justin could've drank 5 bottles before the trip, 25 bottles during the trip, and 10 bottles (which are the rest of the bottles) after the trip.

    5 + 25 + 10 = 40
