Step-by-step explanation:
The surface area of a cylinder is made up of the lateral area (area of the curved side of the cylinder) and of the ends.
The lateral area is A = πdh, where d is the diameter of the cylinder and h is the height. This is equivalent to A = 2πrh, where r is the radius.
The area of one end of the cylinder is A = πr².
We must multiply that by 2 if we want the total area of the ends.
Then the overall total is
A = πdh + 2πr², or 2πrh + 2πr².
