If x=2 and y=5, how would you work out 3x to the power of 2 + y?

    You have to plug in the numbers for x and y. So 3 the the power of 2 will turn into 3 (2^2) and the y into 5. Which leaves your new equation

    3 (2^2) + 5 which simplifies to 17.
