12 and 16 are divisible by 2
so
12/2=6
16/2=8
now we have 6,8
6 and 8 are divisible by 2 as well
6/2=3
8/2=4
3,4 is what we are left with
since we had to divide these numbers by 2 both times, multiply them.
2*2=4
4 is the hcf
