Think about it like it's on a number line:
-14 + 25
You can use the commutive property of addition, which is just a fancy way of saying to switch the numbers around. Now you have:
25 - 14
Which is much easier. Take the 1 away from the 2, and the 4 away from the 5, and you get:
-14 + 25 = 11
