    24 hours total - 16 hours asleep = 8 hours awake

    He was awake for 8 hours, because if there are 24 hours in the day, you divide by three and times by two to get the amount of hours he is asleep for. 24 divided by three is eight, and eight multiplied by 2 is sixteen. to work out the number of hours he was awake take 16 from 24. this leaves you with 8 hours.
