Because when you square 8 or - 8, you will still end up at 64

    8 x 8 = 64

    (-8) x (-8) = 64

Ok so the square root of 64 is both positive and negative 8 because:

8^2 = 64 but at the same time:

(-8) ^2=64 because - to the power of two becomes positive so it has two answers because both 8 and - 8 to the power of 2 is 64
