In a survey, 85% of those who responded to a survey were over 40 and voted in this last election. If the population of a town was 15,000, how many people were over 40 and voted?

    percent means parts out of 100 so 85% is 85/100

    85% 'of' 15000 means 85/100 times 15000=12750 people who were over 40 and voted
