    maximum value at y = 4

    The equation of a parabola in vertex form is

    y = a (x - h) ² + k

    where (h, k) are the coordinates of the vertex and a is a multiplier

    y = - 3 (x + 1) ² + 4 is in this form

    with vertex = ( - 1, 4) and a = - 3

    • If a > 0 then vertex is a minimum

    • If a < 0 then vertex is a maximum

    here a < 0

    ( - 1, 4) is a maximum and maximum value = 4
