The library is having a contest to guess the number of candy pieces of candy in a jar. Johns guess of three times the number of candy pieces in the jar increased by 100 is lower than Keisha's guess of 250 less than twice the number of candy pieces. Anna writes the inequality 3x100 <250-2x, Which is incorrect. Can You Find Anna's Mistake? What is the correct way to write this inequality?

Answer: The correct way to write the inequality is:

    3x+100 ∠ 2x - 250

    Step-by-step explanation:

    Hi, Anna's mistakes:

Three times the number of candy pieces in the jar increased by 100

Number of candy pieces is the variable (x)

Three times the number of candy pieces means "x" multiplied by 3, and increased by 100 means that we have to add 100 to the previous expression (3x + 100), not multiply it by 100.

In the other side: "Keisha's guess of 250 less than twice the number of candy pieces"

Twice the number of candy pieces means that we have to multiply the candy pieces by two (2x), and 250 less means that we have to subtract 250 to the twice of candy pieces (2x) and not the opposite way (subtract 2x to 250)

    2x-250, not 250-2x.

So, the correct way to write the inequality is:

    3x+100 ∠ 2x - 250

    She forgot to write + 100 on the 3x + 100 side. Also on the second side, it isn't 250 - 2x,

    it's 2x - 250.
