    Here let us find area of square first with side 8 feet.

    Area of square = side * side = 8*8 = 64 feet square ... (1)

    now the dimension of rectangular garden are:

    length = 8+2 = 10 feet

    width = 8+1 = 9 feet

    Area of rectangle = l * w = 10*9 = 90 square feet ... (2)

    difference = area of rectangle - area of square

    plugging values from (1) and (2)

    Difference = 90-64 = 26 square feet

    So 26 square feet in area will be added to the garden.
