x²-3x-3=0. have to get 0 on right first

identify a, b, c. a is 1, b is - 3, c is - 3

now plug in to the quadratic formula ...

x = - b±√ (b²-4*a*c) / 2a

x = - (-3) ± √ ((-3) ²-4*1 * (-3)) / (2*1)

x = 3 ± √ (9 - - 12) / 2

x = (3 ± √21) / 2
