A rational number is a number that can be made by dividing 2 integers, such as 0.25 or 3/4.

An irrational number is a number that is not an imaginary number and cannot be expressed as a ratio between 2 integers. Basically, if an irrational number was written in a decimal notation, there would be an infinite amount of integers on the right side of the decimal. An example would be π (pi) or √2.
