2x + 4y = 16
and
x - 7 = - 4y
This problem can be easily solved by the method of substitution.
x = 7 - 4y
If we now replace the x in the first equation by the value of x we found from the second equation, then
2x + 4y = 16
2 (7 - 4y) + 4y = 16
14 - 8y + 4y = 16
14 - 4y = 16
-4y = 16 - 14
-4y = 2
-y = 1/2
y = - 1/2
Now if we replace the value of y in the first equation, we can get the value of x
2x + 4y = 16
2x + 4 (-1/2) = 16
2x - 2 = 16
2x = 16 + 2
2x = 18
x = 9
