    Tan = opposite leg/adjacent leg. it can also be written as sin/cos. to see why, since sin = opposite leg/hypotenuse and cos = adjacent leg/hypotenuse, when you divide the 2 you get:

    sin/cos = (opp/hyp) (hyp/adj) = opp/adj and therefore this ratio is also tan.
