F (x) is ur dependent variable ... x is ur independent varible

    f (x) = - 3x^2 + 5x ... when x = - 4

    f (x) = - 3 (-4^2) + 5 (-4)

    f (x) = - 3 (16) - 20

    f (x) = - 48 - 20

    f (x) = - 68 ... so ur dependent variable is - 68 when ur independent variable is - 4
