a² + 8a - 20 = a² + 2*4*a - 20 = a² + 8a + 16 - 16 - 20 = (a + 4) ² - 36 = (a + 4) ² - 6² = (a + 4 - 6) (a + 4 + 6) = (a - 2) (a + 10)
