    9x-y=71

    x+8y=16

    8 (9x-y=71)

    72x-8y=568

    x+8y=16

    You add the like terms together and the y's get "eliminated" making it

    73x=584

    x=8

    Plug x into one of the original equations (either one it will give you the same answer)

    9 (8) - y=71

    72-y=71

    -y=-1

    y=1

    x=8 y=1 or (8,1) is the final answer.

    multiply x+8y=16 by 9 which is 9x+72y=144

    then you get y=1 after equation work

    sub y=1 into equation x+8y=16

    then you get x=8
