pretend the x²+5x+2 part is the a in

    a (b+c) = ab+ac

    so

    (x-1) (x²+5x+2) =

    (x²+5x+2) (x-1) =

    (x²+5x+2) (x) + (x²+5x+2) (-1) =

    x³+5x²+2x-x²-5x-2=

    x³+4x²-3x-2
