    - (z + (-17)) = 12 + 17

    - (z - 17) = 12 + 17

    Distribute - 1:

    -z + 17 = 12 + 17

    Subtract 17 to both sides:

    -z = 12

    Multiply - 1 to both sides:

    z = - 12
