So what you do is 18/1 - 1/3 then you find the least common denominator which is 3

then you multiply 18/1 by three and turn it into 54/3

then you do 54/3-1/3 which equals 53/3

answer is 17 2/3

18 - 1/3 = 53/3 or 17 2/3

12 - 1/4 = 47/4 or 11 3/4
