    Adding 12 to the first equation, we have x=24. We can do the same with the second to find that y=24.

    Note that the parentheses in the first equation don't actually change the value!

    First question:

    solve your equation step-by-step.

    x-12=12

    Add 12 to both sides.

    x-12+12=12+12

    x=24

    Second question

    This question is technically the same with the first question but it has differen't variable and has no parenthesis. You can still get the same answer without using the parenthesis.

    solve your equation step-by-step.

    y-12=12

    Add 12 to both sides.

    y-12+12=12+12

    y=24
