To determine a unit rate, the denominator of the fraction must equal 1.

    Example:

    17 miles

    1 gallon

    = 17 miles per 1 gallon = 17 miles per gallon

If the denominator of the fraction is not equal to 1, compute the unit rate by dividing.

    Example:

    120 hours

    2.5 weeks

    = 120 hours : 2.5 weeks = 48 hours per week

Unit rates should fit the context of the problem and make sense.

    Example: Five apples cost $1.75.

$0.35 per apple or approximately 2.86 apples per dollar.
