A store marks up merchandise 40%for profit. If an item costs the store $12, what is the selling price?

    40% of $12

    = 40% * 12

    = (40/100) * 12

    = 0.4 * 12 = 4.8

    Since it is a profit, selling price = 12 + 4.8 = 16.8

    Selling price = $16.80
