Add or subtract the following mixed numbers. First change each mixed number to an equivalent improper fraction. Then find a common denominator, and proceed as before. Leave your answer as an improper fraction. Be sure your answers are reduced to lowest terms. 1 4/9 + 3 1/3 =

    1 (4/9) = 13/9 ... 3 1/3 = 10/3

    13/9 + 10/3 you must first have equal denominators (bottom numbers)

    13/9 + 30/9 = 43/9 or 4 7/9
