What is the meaning of this WW1 quote?

"The First World War killed fewer victims than the Second World War, destroyed fewer buildings, and uprooted millions instead of tens of millions - but in many ways it left even deeper scars both on the mind and on the map of Europe. The old world never recovered from the shock."

    The Great War (WW1) killed many empires who had been around for hundreds of years. It introduced some very inhumane weapons such as gas, and was the 1st war when old tactics met new ones. Back then, a war on this scale has never been seen.

    It also gave birth to many new nations
